The Future of Media Depends on the People Building It: Why We’re Heading to IBC 2026

Technology changes the possibilities of media, but possibilities aren't the same as progress. The more interesting question is what happens when emerging technology reaches the people with the curiosity, environment, and practical skills to push past the hype cycle.

That question sits at the very heart of IBC 2026, running from 11–14 September at RAI Amsterdam. Gathering more than 45,000 creators, broadcasters, technologists, and platform leaders across 14 exhibition halls, the convention has structured this year's agenda around three core pillars: Transformative Tech, Shifting Business Models, and People & Purpose.

For Leren Labs, IBC is far more than a trade showcase. It is an industry-wide checkpoint on learning, talent pipelines, and whether the media ecosystem is preparing the next generation to turn raw compute into meaningful experiences.

Beyond the Demos: The Talent Dilemma

Walk the floor at the RAI this year and the technological velocity is undeniable.

Between IBC’s Accelerator Media Innovation Programme and widespread rollouts of cloud-native infrastructure, low-latency pipelines, and real-time interactive video, the media tech stack has never been more potent.

Yet the media sector does not suffer from a deficit of algorithms or bandwidth; it faces a talent and translation bottleneck:

• The Application Gap: A researcher can design a multimodal model, but can an editor fluidly query it inside an active broadcast deadline?
• The Reality Gap: A student can learn software theory, but do they understand the harsh latency, rights management, and provenance constraints of live international transmission?
• The Judgment Deficit: When automated tools make asset generation trivial, human editorial judgment, contextual awareness, and storytelling instinct become the real differentiators.

Tools cannot innovate on their own. Someone has to test their edges, stress-test their assumptions, fail in safe sandboxes, and integrate them into sustainable workflows.

Hall 14 and the Ignite Stage: Connecting Education with Industry

To bridge this divide, IBC launched Future Tech Ignite in Hall 14, in partnership with EIT Culture & Creativity. Designed to break the traditional wall between academic research, early-stage startups, and heritage broadcasters, Hall 14 serves as a testbed where ideas graduate from conceptual demos into production-ready platforms.

The session convenes perspectives from Leren Labs, the University of Edinburgh, the City of Amsterdam, TG4, and EIT Culture & Creativity to address a practical imperative: how cities, national broadcasters, research institutions, and agile labs can build joint sandboxes where emerging talent gets hands-on access to production constraints early in their careers.
